Understanding the Purification System

The Lab2000 purification unit contains one (standard) or two (optional) columns packed with:

  • Copper-based catalyst (Cu°): Chemisorbs O₂. When saturated, it is regenerated by heating to ~200–300°C under a dilute H₂/inert gas mixture (5–10% H₂ in N₂ or Ar), reducing CuO back to Cu°.
  • Molecular sieve (3Å or 4Å zeolite): Physically adsorbs H₂O. Regenerated by heating to ~250–350°C under dry inert flow to desorb trapped water.

In a single-column system, the box must be taken offline (main chamber isolated or work paused) during regeneration. In a dual-column system, one column regenerates while the other maintains circulation—no interruption to experiments.

Regeneration frequency depends on usage: frequent antechamber cycles, large sample transfers, or solvent vapors accelerate saturation. Typical intervals range from several months to over a year in careful use.

Purification Column Regeneration Procedure (Overview)

Always follow the detailed steps in your Lab2000 Operation Manual, but the general sequence is:

  1. Ensure the main chamber O₂/H₂O is acceptable or isolate the chamber if your model supports valved isolation.
  2. Close the inlet/outlet valves to the column being regenerated (dual-column systems switch automatically via PLC).
  3. Connect the regeneration gas (5–10% H₂ in high-purity N₂ or Ar) to the regeneration inlet.
  4. Via the touch screen, select “Regenerate Column A/B.” The system heats the column gradually to the set temperature and maintains it while flowing regeneration gas.
  5. After the dwell period (usually several hours), the system cools the column under inert flow.
  6. Upon completion, the PLC re-introduces the column into the circulation loop.
  7. Verify O₂/H₂O readings return to expected baseline.

⚠️ Safety: Regeneration uses a flammable H₂ mixture. Ensure the lab is well-ventilated, no ignition sources nearby, and the exhaust is directed to a safe location. Only trained personnel should initiate regeneration.

O₂ / H₂O Reading Too High — Diagnostic Checklist

Follow this order to quickly locate the issue:

Step 1 – Check the Sensors

Expose the O₂ sensor briefly to ambient air (carefully, via a sealed test port or by removing and reinserting in a controlled manner): it should read ~20.9%. If it does not respond or reads wildly inaccurate, the sensor may need replacement (typical lifespan 1–2 years depending on use).

The moisture (dew point) transmitter can be checked against a calibrated portable hygrometer if available. Drift or sluggish response suggests contamination or end-of-life.

Step 2 – Inspect Gloves & Seals

The most common leak source is a pinhole in a butyl glove, especially near fingertips. Gently pressurize the box slightly above ambient, then pass a soap bubble solution along glove seams and O-rings. Bubbles indicate leakage.

Step 3 – Verify Antechamber Operation

Was the antechamber properly vacuum-purged before opening the inner door? Incomplete purging introduces ambient air directly into the main chamber.

Step 4 – Confirm Working Gas Supply

Low cylinder pressure or closed regulator prevents the auto-makeup valve from compensating for minor leaks, causing gradual pressure drop and potential air ingress.

Verify the gas is indeed high-purity (≥99.999%) and the regulator is set correctly (typically 0.4–0.6 MPa working pressure at the box inlet).

Step 5 – Evaluate Purification Column Status

If sensors are good, no leaks found, antechamber used correctly, and gas supply is fine—then the purification columns are likely saturated and need regeneration.

After regeneration, O₂/H₂O should drop rapidly during circulation. If not, check column valve positions and heater function (PLC will show fault codes if heater fails).
