Owning a high-purity inert gas glove box such as the Etelux Lab2000 Series is only half the equation—correct daily operation is what preserves the ultra-low O₂/H₂O environment and extends the life of the purification columns. Improper use of the antechamber (transfer / pass-box) is the #1 cause of water/oxygen spikes in otherwise well-functioning systems. This article outlines best-practice procedures for startup, sample transfer, routine checks, and shutdown.
Pre-Operation Checks
Before beginning work each day:
- Verify working gas supply: Ensure the high-purity N₂ or Ar cylinder (≥99.999%) has adequate pressure (typically >2 MPa / 300 psi residual). Low gas pressure can cause the auto-makeup system to fail, leading to negative pressure and air ingress.
- Confirm purification system status: Check the PLC display—circulation fan should be running, purification column temperature normal, and O₂/H₂O readings within specification (<1 ppm for a stabilized box). If the column is in “Regenerating” status, do not open the main chamber.
- Inspect gloves and seals: Visually check butyl rubber gloves for cracks, thinning, or punctures. Press gloves lightly to feel for pressure differential anomalies. Ensure the glove sealing ring and chamber door O-ring are clean and undamaged.
- Check antechamber door seals: Wipe the antechamber door seal with a lint-free cloth if needed; confirm the door closes fully and latches.
Starting Up the Lab2000 System
For a system that has been idle:
- Power on the main switch; the Siemens touch-screen controller initializes.
- Start the circulation fan and verify the purification column(s) are active.
- Allow 15–60 minutes (depending on chamber volume and previous exposure) for O₂ and H₂O to drop below your target threshold if the box was last opened. New installations or boxes exposed to air may require a vacuum-purge cycle (see below).
- Monitor the O₂ and H₂O digital readouts (GE OXY-IQ and GE VeriDri transmitters). Only begin sample handling when values are stable in the specified range.
If the main chamber has been exposed to air (e.g., after moving the unit or a prolonged open-door event), perform vacuum-purge cycles on the main chamber: evacuate to ≤ 5–10 mbar, backfill with high-purity inert gas, repeat 3–5 times. Then activate circulation and allow the purification system to bring O₂/H₂O down to <1 ppm.
Using the Antechamber (Transition / Pass-Box) Correctly
The antechamber allows materials to enter or leave the glove box without exposing the main chamber to ambient air.
To bring items INTO the box:
- Open the outer antechamber door, place items on the tray, and close the outer door firmly.
- Close the isolation valve between antechamber and main chamber (if equipped with manual valve; automatic on Lab2000).
- Evacuate the antechamber to the preset vacuum level (typically ≤ 5–10 mbar).
- Backfill slowly with inert gas from the glove box loop or a dedicated cylinder.
- Repeat vacuum–purge 1–3 times depending on sensitivity (3 cycles for <1 ppm work).
- Verify antechamber O₂/H₂O if a mini-sensor is present, or simply confirm pressure equalization.
- Open the inner door (isolation valve closed to main chamber side if manual) and transfer items in.
- Close the inner door before resuming main chamber circulation.
To take items OUT of the box:
Reverse the process: place items in antechamber, close inner door, optionally evacuate/backfill to push residual box atmosphere out, then open outer door.
Critical rules:
- Never open both antechamber doors simultaneously.
- Always close one door fully before beginning evacuation/purge.
- Do not overload the antechamber—ensure the vacuum pump can reach target pressure.
- For volatile solvent-containing items, purge extra times or briefly vent through the solvent-safe exhaust (if equipped) to avoid carrying solvent vapors into the main purification loop.
During Operation Inside the Chamber
- Keep gloves slightly inflated (positive pressure) to avoid them being sucked inward and contacting sharp objects.
- Do not use sharp tools near gloves; a puncture will instantly admit air and spike O₂/H₂O readings.
- Minimize time with gloves removed from the ports (always keep blanking plugs handy).
- If you notice a sudden O₂/H₂O rise while working, check: Is a glove port loose? Did someone leave the antechamber inner door ajar? Is the outer antechamber door fully sealed?
End-of-Day & Extended Shutdown
- Complete all transfers and close antechamber doors.
- Verify O₂/H₂O readings are stable.
- For overnight or weekend: the Lab2000 purification system is designed for 24/7 continuous circulation. Leave the circulation fan and purification ON unless instructed otherwise. This maintains atmosphere and prevents moisture outgassing from internal surfaces.
- If shutting down for extended periods (>1 week): consult the manual, but typically you may leave the system under slight positive pressure with circulation OFF only after confirming no ongoing experiments and sealing all ports. Some users prefer keeping circulation ON to avoid re-conditioning time upon restart.
- Log O₂/H₂O values, any alarms encountered, and glove condition in your lab notebook.
Safety Notes:
- Glove boxes are NOT designed for handling large quantities of pyrophoric liquids or high-pressure reactions inside the chamber unless specifically rated and equipped with burst discs and gas monitoring.
- If toxic gas (e.g., H₂S from sulfide electrolytes) is suspected inside, keep circulation closed, do not open, and contact trained personnel.
- In case of glove rupture during operation: immediately withdraw hands, close the isolation valve if fitted, or seal the port with a blanking plug. The box will go into slight positive pressure bleed-off; allow O₂/H₂O to stabilize before resuming.
